On May 10, 1857, Indian sepoys in Meerut rebelled against the British East India Company. This marked the beginning of the first widespread revolt against British colonial rule, later known as the First War of Indian Independence. Though the revolt was suppressed, it laid the foundation for future nationalist movements.
