Gujarat has launched Project SAMARTH at IIT Gandhinagar with a ₹190 crore investment to strengthen semiconductor manufacturing, research, innovation, and workforce development for India’s growing chip industry.

• Project SAMARTH, short for Silicon and Advanced Semiconductor Manufacturing Research and Training Hub, is being established at IIT Gandhinagar with a total investment of ₹190 crore.
• The initiative is a joint collaboration between the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, the Gujarat Department of Science and Technology, and IIT Gandhinagar to strengthen India’s semiconductor ecosystem.
• The centre will provide hands-on training to technicians, operators, engineers, and students, preparing them for semiconductor fabrication plants through industry-oriented practical learning and advanced manufacturing exposure.
• Over the next five years, the facility aims to train around 10,000 participants, including engineering students, research scholars, technicians, and professionals through specialized certificate programmes.
• The hub will promote indigenous semiconductor research, advanced process development, fabrication technologies, and the creation of specialized semiconductor devices and manufacturing tools within India.
• IIT Gandhinagar has initiated procurement of advanced semiconductor equipment and is signing partnerships with engineering institutions across Gujarat to expand technical training opportunities.
• L&T Semiconductor Technologies is collaborating with IIT Gandhinagar under the SAMARTH initiative to support research, skill development, innovation, and industry-focused semiconductor capacity building.
• The project is expected to strengthen India’s semiconductor mission by developing a highly skilled workforce capable of supporting future chip manufacturing and electronics production facilities.
