India has strengthened wildlife conservation efforts with the inauguration of the Centre of Excellence on Human-Wildlife Conflict in Coimbatore and the launch of the National Human-Wildlife Conflict Portal to improve research, monitoring, and conflict mitigation.

• Union Environment, Forest and Climate Change Minister Bhupender Yadav inaugurated the Centre of Excellence on Human-Wildlife Conflict at the Wildlife Institute of India–Sálim Ali Centre for Ornithology and Natural History in Coimbatore.
• The Minister also launched the National Human-Wildlife Conflict Portal, a digital platform designed to strengthen nationwide data management, knowledge sharing, and evidence-based decision-making for conflict mitigation.
• The Centre of Excellence will function as India’s national hub for research, innovation, policy support, capacity building, and scientific management of human-wildlife conflict across diverse ecosystems.
• The initiative will focus on developing practical strategies to manage conflicts involving elephants, leopards, tigers outside protected reserves, and other wildlife through area-specific and species-specific approaches.
• The national workshop brought together policymakers, forest officials, scientists, researchers, technology experts, and conservation practitioners to discuss innovative solutions for reducing human-wildlife conflict.
• The Centre will promote the use of advanced technologies, digital monitoring systems, community participation, telecommunication tools, and scientific conservation practices to improve wildlife conflict management.
• During the event, the first edition of Current Status of Human-Wildlife Conflict in India: An Overview was released, highlighting emerging trends, challenges, and the current national scenario.
• The government emphasized that coexistence between people and wildlife, supported by scientific research, public awareness, and coordinated stakeholder participation, remains essential for achieving long-term ecological sustainability.
