The Ministry of Education has launched the Prime Minister Research Chair Scheme 2026 to attract Indian-origin researchers worldwide and strengthen India’s research, innovation and technology ecosystem.

- Key objectives include attracting global Indian talent, promoting innovation, supporting strategic sectors and enhancing international research partnerships.
- The scheme focuses on 13 priority sectors including artificial intelligence, semiconductors, cybersecurity, biotechnology, healthcare, space, defence and climate sustainability.
- Three fellowship categories have been created comprising Young Research Fellows, Senior Research Fellows and Research Chairs for distinguished global experts.
- Eligible applicants include Indian nationals working abroad, OCI cardholders, PIOs, researchers and technology leaders from reputed international institutions.
- Leading institutions including IIT Delhi, IIT Bombay, IIT Madras, IIT Kanpur, IIT Hyderabad, IIT ISM Dhanbad and IISc Bengaluru will serve as Lead Institutions.
- Fellows will receive research support, grants, infrastructure access and collaboration opportunities, while institutions will benefit from global expertise and stronger academic networks.
