The medals of Flt Lt James “Cookie” Long, a pilot executed after his involvement in the Great Escape during World War II, have been returned to his former squadron. Long was one of 50 men executed by Nazi orders in 1944, following the daring breakout from Stalag Luft III. His medals, which were set to be auctioned, were secured by the IX (Bomber) Squadron in a private sale, with help from the squadron’s members.
