The Indian Space Research Organisation has achieved a major milestone for India’s first human spaceflight programme by successfully testing the SOLVE vehicle propulsion system for crew module recovery experiments.

- ISRO successfully conducted the first ground test of the SOLVE solid motor on July 3, 2026, strengthening preparations for the Gaganyaan human spaceflight mission and advanced recovery system validation.
- The test was carried out at the Static Test Facility of the Satish Dhawan Space Centre, Sriharikota, where the solid propulsion system performed according to expected operational parameters.
- SOLVE (Sub-Orbital Launch Vehicle for Experiments) is an experimental sub-orbital vehicle developed by ISRO to test critical deceleration and recovery technologies required for crew safety.
- The SOLVE system will support crew module recovery trials by taking the module to an altitude of around 10–17 kilometres, followed by parachute deployment and controlled water landing.
- During recovery tests, the crew module will use a series of 10 parachutes designed to reduce speed and ensure safe landing procedures under realistic mission conditions.
- The solid propulsion stage of SOLVE is based on modified technology from the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle, incorporating advanced slow-burning processes and a specially designed nozzle system.
- The successful motor test will help ISRO evaluate complete recovery operations, including launch conditions, separation processes, parachute performance, and crew module safety mechanisms.
- The Gaganyaan mission aims to send Indian astronauts into low Earth orbit while demonstrating indigenous human spaceflight capabilities and developing advanced technologies for astronaut safety.
- Before the final human spaceflight mission, ISRO plans multiple uncrewed and technology demonstration missions to validate spacecraft systems, life support mechanisms, and emergency recovery procedures.
