- Indian Railways has launched a redesigned logo featuring 18 red stars, symbolizing the country’s 18 railway zones after the creation of the South Coast Railway Zone.
- The South Coast Railway (SCoR) will officially become India’s 18th railway zone from June 1, 2026, following approval by the Ministry of Railways and Railway Board.
- The headquarters of the new railway zone will be established in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, strengthening the city’s role as a major transportation and logistics hub.
- South Coast Railway has been formed by reorganizing portions of the existing South Central Railway and East Coast Railway to improve administrative efficiency and operational management.
- The new zone will include Guntakal, Guntur, Vijayawada and Visakhapatnam divisions, covering important railway routes across Andhra Pradesh and neighbouring states.
- The headquarters project at Mudasarlova in Visakhapatnam will be developed over 52.2 acres with an estimated investment of about ₹183.58 crore.
- The restructuring also includes the creation of the Rayagada Division under East Coast Railway, while the existing Waltair Division will be divided between two zones.
- The new railway zone is expected to improve passenger services, freight transportation, port connectivity, infrastructure development and overall railway administration in southern India.
