The Indian Air Force has secured the third position globally in the WDMMA 2026 Global Air Power Rankings, highlighting India’s expanding military aviation capabilities, fleet modernisation, and growing strategic air defence strength.

• The Indian Air Force has been ranked the third strongest military aviation power globally in the WDMMA 2026 Global Air Power Rankings, behind only the United States and Russia.
• The World Directory of Modern Military Aircraft evaluates global air forces through its TruVal Rating system, measuring combat capability, logistics, aircraft quality, modernization, operational readiness, and overall force strength.
• According to the rankings, the Indian Air Force operates a fleet of 1,716 aircraft, including 542 fighter jets, 498 helicopters, 282 transport aircraft, and 374 trainer aircraft.
• While India ranked third by country, the Indian Air Force secured the sixth position when individual military air service branches were assessed independently.
• The Indian Air Force currently operates 29 fighter squadrons against an approved strength of 42 squadrons, with modernization plans aimed at bridging the capability gap.
• India is strengthening its air combat capabilities through the planned induction of 180 Tejas Mk-1A fighter aircraft and the proposed acquisition of 114 additional Rafale fighter jets.
