- India conducted its first GAGAN-based satellite landing approach for a jet aircraft on 27 June 2026 at Udaipur Airport using an IndiGo Airbus A320.
- GAGAN, or GPS Aided GEO Augmented Navigation, is India’s Satellite-Based Augmentation System jointly developed by ISRO and the Airports Authority of India.
- The system improves GPS accuracy using geostationary satellites and ground reference stations, providing highly precise navigation support for civil aviation operations.
- GAGAN enables Localiser Performance with Vertical Guidance approaches, offering accurate horizontal and vertical guidance at airports lacking Instrument Landing Systems.
- The Directorate General of Civil Aviation mandated GAGAN equipment for all aircraft registered in India after 1 July 2021 to improve aviation safety.
- India became the first country in the Asia-Pacific region to operationalise a Satellite-Based Augmentation System for civil aviation navigation services.
- Besides aviation, GAGAN also supports railway operations, maritime navigation, surveying, disaster management, security applications, and advanced Air Traffic Management services.
