• Commerce Secretary Rajesh Agarwal stated that India’s trade and investment policies remain aligned with World Trade Organization principles while balancing the developmental priorities of a large developing economy.
• India highlighted that tariff reforms, customs modernisation, and an expanding network of Free Trade Agreements have strengthened global economic integration while supporting domestic manufacturing and economic growth.
• During the review, India received 1,094 written questions from 44 World Trade Organization members, while 68 members participated in discussions held on 21 and 23 July.
• Several member countries appreciated India’s economic resilience, Digital Public Infrastructure, customs reforms, startup ecosystem, innovation initiatives, and efforts to integrate micro, small, and medium enterprises into global value chains.
• India reaffirmed that its agricultural tariff policies protect the livelihoods of small and resource-poor farmers, while industrial tariff measures strengthen supply chains and domestic manufacturing capabilities.
• The government reiterated its commitment to transparency in sanitary and phytosanitary measures, technical regulations, trade remedies, intellectual property reforms, investment facilitation, and sustainable economic development.
• India emphasized that future World Trade Organization reforms should remain development-oriented, preserve policy space for developing countries, strengthen multilateral cooperation, and promote inclusive global prosperity under the spirit of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam.
