- At its biweekly briefing on 7 October 2026, the Ministry of External Affairs said India wants positive, constructive and forward-looking engagement with Bangladesh.
- Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said the approach has a people-centric focus aimed at mutual growth and prosperity.
- Asked about the extradition of ousted Bangladeshi prime minister Sheikh Hasina, he described it as a legal matter involving legalities.
- He did not directly say whether Bangladesh has sent the ICT-related documents needed to begin the extradition process.
- He was responding to Bangladesh's State Minister for Foreign Affairs, who said Hasina's activities in India are the main challenge to Prime Minister Tarique Rahman's planned Delhi visit.
- Tarique Rahman of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party became prime minister on 17 February 2026 after the 2026 general election, succeeding the Yunus-led interim government.
- India formally invited Rahman for a bilateral visit after he took office, and Bangladeshi officials confirmed receiving the invitation.
- In August, the MEA distanced the government from a private media event in Delhi featuring Hasina and said it did not endorse any views expressed there.
- India's High Commissioner to Bangladesh, Dinesh Trivedi, said recently that Hasina's arrival in Delhi two years ago was unexpected and that the Indian military played no role in the flight arrangements.
- Hasina left Bangladesh for India in August 2024 after the July uprising that ended her 16-year rule.
