- India has launched the SkyCast System at Delhi’s IGI Airport, becoming the 19th country to adopt an advanced aviation weather monitoring platform.
- The system was inaugurated under Mission Mausam by Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh.
- SkyCast provides real-time atmospheric intelligence to improve decision-making for pilots, air traffic controllers and airport authorities.
- It continuously monitors fog formation, visibility, wind speed, turbulence, moisture levels, temperature and aerosol concentration.
- The system is expected to significantly reduce flight delays, cancellations and diversions caused by fog and low visibility conditions, especially during winter.
- SkyCast integrates advanced technologies such as Radar Wind Profiler, SODAR, Microwave Radiometer and Lidar-based Ceilometer.
- It offers short-term weather alerts several hours in advance, improving operational planning and aviation safety.
- The initiative is part of India’s broader effort to modernise weather forecasting infrastructure through AI-based and high-resolution monitoring systems.
