- IITM and ARIES signed a Memorandum of Understanding on 18 June 2026 to establish a long-term climate observation station in Uttarakhand.
- The agreement will remain effective for more than 50 years, enabling sustained climate monitoring and collaborative atmospheric research activities.
- A new Climate Observation Station will be established at the Devasthal campus to collect high-quality environmental and climate datasets.
- The facility will monitor meteorological parameters, greenhouse gases, atmospheric chemistry, soil moisture and short-lived climate forcing agents continuously.
- Devasthal’s high-altitude and relatively pristine environment makes it an ideal location for advanced atmospheric and climate observations.
- Scientists will study greenhouse gas concentrations, pollutant transport mechanisms and climate processes influencing the Himalayan ecosystem and surrounding regions.
- The initiative is part of the Bharat Climate Observation Network, a national programme aimed at building a high-precision climate monitoring framework.
- Data generated through the project will support climate trend analysis, improve Earth System Models and strengthen evidence-based policymaking in India.
