- The Election Commission of India revised the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) schedule for Maharashtra's electoral rolls, with the order communicated to the state's Chief Electoral Officer on October 29.
- The qualifying date for the revision is October 1, 2026.
- The period for filing claims and objections now runs from August 31 to November 13.
- Notices and the disposal of claims and objections run concurrently from August 31 to November 25.
- The final electoral roll for Maharashtra will be published on November 30, 2026.
- The Chief Electoral Officer has been told to publish the notification in an extraordinary issue of the State Gazette and give it wide publicity.
- The latest revision follows several earlier orders issued between May and October 2026 and a formal request from the state election office dated October 29.
- It came a day after the Supreme Court asked the Election Commission not to set rigid deadlines.
- Two crore names have been deleted from Maharashtra's rolls, including 34 lakh in Mumbai, amid protests over the deletion of about 13 crore names across the country.
- The Election Commission says deleted entries relate to voters who are absent, have shifted residence, are deceased or have duplicate registrations, and it is running special camps to help those left out.
- Political leaders have alleged a shortage of Booth Level Officers for door-to-door verification, and Mumbadevi MLA Amin Patel backed the extension while calling for the whole process to be scrapped.
- The Supreme Court also adjourned pleas challenging the Election Commission's functioning to November 17 and asked it to extend deadlines and simplify enrolment in Delhi's SIR.
