- The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approved setting up the Integrated Transport and Logistics Authority (ITLA) on 6 October 2026.
- ITLA is a Special Purpose Vehicle to be housed in the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade.
- It will function as the apex body for integrated transport and logistics planning, research, project appraisal and monitoring, policy support and data analytics.
- ITLA will prepare a National Transport Master Plan with a horizon of ten years or more, covering roads, railways, ports, aviation, waterways, urban mobility and logistics.
- It will evaluate short-term sectoral plans of around five years and annual plans of transport ministries for alignment with the master plan.
- The authority will carry out technical appraisal of government infrastructure projects costing Rs 500 crore or more.
- It will also monitor implementation of such projects, provide a mechanism for resolving issues and assess impact after completion.
- A National Transport Data Repository will pool data from sources such as GSTN e-way bills, FASTag, Vahan, GPS-based systems and urban traffic management systems.
- ITLA will advise on reviewing and updating the National Logistics Policy of 2022, besides promoting research, capacity building and skilling.
- The government expects the body to reduce logistics costs and improve India's competitiveness in line with Vision 2047, tackling fragmented infrastructure planning.
