A small asteroid named 2024 PT5 has temporarily become Earth’s second moon. This phenomenon, known as the “mini moon phase,” will last until late November, according to the European Space Agency (ESA).
BulletsIn
- Asteroid 2024 PT5, 10 meters wide, now orbits Earth temporarily.
- Discovered in August 2024, it originated from the Arjuna asteroid belt near Earth.
- Became Earth’s mini moon due to gravitational influence, replacing its usual Sun orbit.
- Will remain near Earth until approximately November 25, then resume orbit around the Sun.
- Traveling at a slow speed of 3,540 km/h, making it suitable for gravitational capture.
- Too small and dim for the naked eye; visible only via high-power telescopes.
- Interaction occurred as the asteroid approached within 4.5 million km of Earth.
- ESA describes such mini moons as rare, short-term celestial events.
- Unlikely to impact Earth; serves as an object of scientific interest.
- Adds to the study of near-Earth asteroids and their behavior in our solar system.
