Kerala has launched the deployment of ANNAM.AI AI-powered Smart Weather Stations, developed by IIT Ropar, to strengthen climate-smart agriculture, improve hyper-local weather forecasting, and enable data-driven farming under the State Government’s 100-day action plan.

- The Kerala Government, in collaboration with Indian Institute of Technology Ropar (IIT Ropar), has begun deploying ANNAM.AI Smart Weather Stations across the state to promote AI-driven climate-smart agriculture and improve farm-level decision-making.
- The initiative forms a key component of Kerala’s 100-day action plan, aiming to provide farmers with real-time, hyper-local weather intelligence that supports informed decisions on sowing, irrigation, crop protection, harvesting, and disaster preparedness.
- Developed under ANNAM.AI, the indigenous weather stations use Artificial Intelligence to generate highly accurate weather forecasts and crop advisories at a 3-kilometre resolution, enabling village-level climate intelligence.
- The smart weather stations continuously monitor seven critical agricultural parameters—temperature, humidity, rainfall, wind speed, wind direction, solar radiation, and soil moisture—to improve crop management and productivity.
- Kerala was selected for the initiative because of its climate-sensitive geography, diverse agro-climatic conditions, heavy monsoon rainfall, fragmented landholdings, and widespread cultivation of crops such as coconut, banana, pepper, spices, and vegetables.
- The AI-powered advisory system will provide early warnings for pest attacks, crop diseases, extreme weather events, and irrigation requirements, helping farmers reduce crop losses, optimise input use, and improve yields.
- Insights generated from Kerala’s implementation will contribute to the development of India’s national AI-enabled agricultural intelligence ecosystem, supporting advanced crop advisory systems, climate-risk prediction models, and disaster response strategies.
- The initiative is expected to strengthen sustainable agriculture, climate resilience, precision farming, and digital agricultural governance, positioning Kerala as a leading model for AI-powered farming in India.
