The Poligars’ Revolt was an early armed resistance against the British East India Company. It occurred mainly in Tamil Nadu during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Local chieftains, called Poligars or Palaiyakkarars, opposed British revenue demands and loss of autonomy. The revolt marked one of the first organized challenges to colonial authority in India.
