KOLKATA: For the first time in recent memory, the Vijay Diwas celebrations in Kolkata, which mark India’s victory over Pakistan and the creation of Bangladesh in 1971, will likely be without any Muktijoddhas (freedom fighters) present. Organizers have yet to receive confirmations from the veterans, and ongoing unrest in Bangladesh has made travel uncertain. The annual event, typically lasting three days, will also be shortened to one day this year.

- Vijay Diwas, commemorating India’s 1971 victory and Bangladesh’s creation, will be held in Kolkata on Dec 16.
- Muktijoddhas, who were key to the Mukti Bahini resistance during the Bangladesh Liberation War, are unlikely to attend.
- This marks the first time in years that Muktijoddhas will possibly be absent from the event.
- The celebration, traditionally spanning three days, will be reduced to a single day in 2024.
- The uncertainty stems from travel issues and unrest in Bangladesh affecting veterans’ participation.
- Last year, 29 Muktijoddhas and six Bangladesh Army personnel attended the event.
- Over 30 war veterans were part of Vijay Diwas even during the pandemic years.
- Unrest in Bangladesh, including violent student protests, is one of the reasons for the travel difficulties.
- Organizers are awaiting confirmation from Muktijoddhas, but time is running out ahead of the event.
- The Eastern Command headquarters in Kolkata, located at Fort William, hosts the annual Vijay Diwas celebrations.
