- The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approved the Integrated Transport & Logistics Authority (ITLA) on 6 October 2026.
- ITLA will be a Special Purpose Vehicle meant to strengthen research, planning, appraisal, monitoring and impact assessment in transportation and logistics.
- The move seeks to address long-standing problems caused by fragmented planning and implementation across several transport-related ministries and agencies.
- It will function as the apex body for integrated planning, research, project appraisal and monitoring, policy support and data analytics.
- ITLA will prepare a National Transport Master Plan with a horizon of at least ten years, covering roads, rail, ports, aviation, waterways, urban mobility and logistics.
- It will examine the five-year and annual plans of transport ministries to check alignment with the master plan and promote multi-modal infrastructure.
- The authority will monitor transport and infrastructure projects above Rs 500 crore and provide a coordinated mechanism for resolving issues.
- A National Transport Data Repository will pool data from sources such as GSTN e-way bills, FASTag, Vahan, GPS-based systems and urban traffic management systems.
- That data will support freight-flow analysis, origin-destination studies and project monitoring.
- ITLA will also advise on reviewing and updating the National Logistics Policy 2022 and promote research, skilling and capacity building in the sector.
- Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said a key focus is making major infrastructure ministries collaborate on synergistic transport plans.
