- Reliance Industries has proposed the project in Eluru district, using deep coal reserves from the Chintalapudi and Recherla coal blocks.
- The two coal blocks contain an estimated 3,130.61 million tonnes of coal located at depths exceeding 600 metres underground.
- Underground coal gasification converts deep coal into synthesis gas without conventional mining, using controlled oxidants to produce a combustible gas mixture.
- The project’s pilot and exploration phase is planned from the third quarter of 2026 to the fourth quarter of 2027.
- The pilot phase may involve investment of up to ₹3,000 crore, followed by development spending of around ₹1,20,000 crore.
- The production phase is scheduled to begin from 2030, with an estimated investment of ₹1,50,000 crore under the proposed project plan.
- Syngas produced through underground gasification can support hydrogen, methanol, urea, ammonia and synthetic fuel production for industrial applications.
- Reliance estimates the project could generate 3,000 to 5,000 direct jobs and 20,000 to 35,000 indirect and induced livelihoods.
