- Under the SIGHT Mode 2B scheme, the government has awarded 30 Kilo Tonnes Per Annum of green hydrogen production capacity for refineries.
- Indian Oil Corporation Limited’s Panipat refinery has been allocated 10 KTPA capacity, supporting greater integration of green hydrogen into refining operations.
- Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited’s Bina refinery and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited’s Vizag refinery have each received green hydrogen capacity of 5 KTPA.
- Numaligarh Refineries Limited’s refinery has been awarded the remaining 10 KTPA capacity under the government’s green hydrogen transition initiative.
- The projects will follow Build Own Operate arrangements involving private developers, with investments structured specifically for individual green hydrogen production projects.
- Greater green hydrogen adoption in refining could reduce dependence on imported fossil fuels, strengthen energy security and support India’s long-term net-zero objectives.
- The initiative is expected to create domestic demand for clean energy technologies while encouraging industrial decarbonisation and cleaner fuel integration across major refineries.
- The National Green Hydrogen Mission aims to develop India as a global hub for producing, using and exporting green hydrogen and its derivatives.
