- V O Chidambaranar Port Authority in Thoothukudi became India’s first major port recognised as a Scope-2 emission-free port.
- The port also became the first in India to receive ISO 50001:2018 certification for its Energy Management System from Bureau Veritas.
- Renewable energy accounted for 93.89% of the port’s total electricity consumption during the financial year 2025-26.
- The energy management system covers cargo-handling equipment, lighting, buildings, pumps, workshops, energy monitoring, preventive maintenance and renewable energy systems.
- The port currently operates 1.04 MW rooftop solar, 6 MW ground-mounted solar and 2 MW wind power generation capacity.
- Additional projects include a 2 MW solar plant, an 8 MW wind farm with 5-MWh battery storage and a 9 MW wind farm.
- The port has established a Green Hydrogen Hub with a 10 Nm³/hr pilot project and is developing a 3 MW green hydrogen plant.
- It is also developing a green methanol bunkering and refuelling facility featuring two storage tanks with 750-cubic-metre capacity each.
