India has transformed into one of the world’s fastest-growing solar energy markets, with installed solar capacity soaring from 3 GW in 2014 to 162.15 GW by June 2026. Backed by major policy initiatives, domestic manufacturing, and new floating solar projects, the country continues to strengthen its position as a global renewable energy powerhouse.

• India’s installed solar power capacity has expanded from approximately 3 GW in 2014 to 162.15 GW as of 30 June 2026, making solar energy the largest contributor to the country’s renewable energy portfolio.
• The Union Cabinet has approved the Pradhan Mantri Surya Sarovar Yojana (PM-SSY) with an outlay of ₹5,070 crore to develop 5,000 MW of floating solar capacity integrated with 10,000 MWh of energy storage systems between FY27 and FY31.
• According to the National Institute of Solar Energy (NISE), India has an estimated 102.18 GW floating solar potential, with the new scheme expected to reduce nearly 10 million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions annually.
• India added a record 44.61 GW of solar capacity during FY26, while total non-fossil fuel power capacity reached 283.46 GW, including 274.68 GW generated from renewable energy sources.
• Domestic solar module manufacturing capacity has grown dramatically from 2.3 GW in 2014 to around 172 GW by March 2026, supported by the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme and the Approved List of Models and Manufacturers (ALMM).
• Under the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, more than 43 lakh households have installed rooftop solar systems, while ₹14,771.82 crore in central financial assistance had been disbursed by December 2025.
• Through the PM-KUSUM Scheme, over 21.77 lakh farmers have benefited from solar-powered irrigation systems, improving agricultural productivity while reducing dependence on conventional energy sources.
• With 54 solar parks sanctioned nationwide and global initiatives such as the International Solar Alliance (ISA) and One Sun One World One Grid (OSOWOG), India continues to emerge as a global leader in renewable energy, clean technology, and sustainable development.
