Supreme Court proposed a permanent women-only Vice-President post in the SCBA from the 2027-28 election cycle.
The proposal was discussed during hearings focused on reforms in Bar associations and women’s representation in the legal profession.
The court asked the SCBA General Body to formally consider the proposal for implementation in future elections.
Earlier, the Supreme Court had reserved the Vice-President post for women during the 2026-27 SCBA elections.
Following objections from several women advocates, the court restored the earlier reservation arrangement for the upcoming election cycle.
Under the restored structure, the Secretary’s post, two Senior Executive Committee posts, and three Executive Committee posts remain reserved for women members.
Women lawyers argued that the Secretary’s post carries greater administrative and functional importance within the association.
The Supreme Court Bar Association is the recognised body representing advocates practising before the Supreme Court of India.
The proposal aims to increase women’s participation in leadership roles and decision-making within legal institutions.
The move could influence similar gender representation reforms in Bar associations and professional legal bodies across the country.
